Here is a step-by-step guide to setting up multi-factor authentication for your Microsoft 365 account:

  1. Log in to your Microsoft 365 account using your usual credentials.
  2. After you select Sign in, you will be prompted to provide additional information.
  3. Select Next.
  4. The default method of authentication is to use the free Microsoft Authenticator app. If you have it installed on your mobile device, select Next, and then follow the prompts to add this account. If you do not have the app installed, a link will be provided for you to download it.
  5. If you prefer to use text message verification instead, select I want to set up a different method. Microsoft 365 will prompt you for your mobile phone number and then send you a text message with a 6-digit code to verify your device.
  6. For a faster and more secure experience, it is recommended to use an authentication app rather than SMS verification.
  7. Once you have completed the instructions to specify your extra verification method, the next time you log in to Microsoft 365, you will be prompted to provide additional information or verification action, such as entering the code provided by your authentication app or received via SMS.
  8. Note: In general, you will only need the extra verification step the first time you log in to a new device or after changing your password. You will not typically be prompted for the verification code on a daily basis, unless your organization requires it.
